Whitstable is a traditional heritage fishing town, which is very popular with tourists and visitors. The town attracts a great number of visitors each year, many from the London area, and many of whom have holiday homes here.
Whitstable has a working harbour, several business parks, both in the town and on the outskirts, with both service and industry mixing with retail. There are also a number of smaller groups of businesses within the town centre; they provide a very useful selection of services and employment.

The town has a large number of high-quality independent shops and regularly attracts positive national publicity. Whitstable Town Management (WTM) seeks to ensure positive promotion of the town and a balance of events to attract visitors.
WTM is part of Canterbury City Council, sitting within the Regeneration and Economic Development division.
Its aim is to promote the town, maintaining its historic character whilst encouraging vitality and a secure future for its resident, business and visitor popularity.
