One of Britain's most popular visitor locations, the City of Canterbury has been a place of pilgrimage throughout the ages, offering unrivalled hospitality. Although it remains a historical centre of international importance, it is also one of the most attractive shopping destinations in the region, boasting a vibrant mix of national and local specialist retailers.
The City Centre has more than 320 retail premises, including three large department stores, numerous restaurants serving every cuisine imaginable, historic and modern pubs, entertainments, parks and gardens and Kent's premier theatre.
Whitefriars, a shopping centre development of over £100 million, is the most significant to be built in the UK since Bluewater and has been designed to blend in with the City's past.
The car-free High Street makes the City ideal for mature or disabled visitors and hosts a street market, which takes place every Wednesday and Friday, together with a daily Farmers Market near St Dunstan's and an indoor antiques market on most Saturdays in the City's Westgate Hall.

Canterbury also has a new Information Centre, which as well as offering exciting gifts and souvenirs, is staffed by people with a wealth of local knowledge on places to stay, local events, local restaurants, pubs, accommodation, museums, art galleries and guided tours for visitors.
The City receives buses and coaches from throughout the country and provides dedicated cycling facilities including cycle lanes and stands. It is serviced by three key car parks plus three Park and Ride sites at Wincheap (serving A2 and A28 northbound), New Dover Road (A2 northbound) and Sturry Road (A28 southbound). The Park and Ride buses run regularly Monday to Saturday and are the most sensible way to get to the City Centre.
Canterbury also has two mainline railway stations, Canterbury East and Canterbury West, the latter potentially a future link in a proposed high-speed rail link network joining London and France.
