Success for C4B's first green conference keynote speaker

A heating scheme fuelled by wood waste, an office 'pool bike', and the cultivation of urban pocket habitats are just some of the green initiatives that local businesses are undertaking to reduce their impact on the environment.

The schemes, implemented by Canterbury Christ Church University, Reeves & Neylan, Crown Products, and Downland Cycles, were the topics of four of the presentations made to delegates at C4B's first environment conference. The conference was held on Earth Day (22 April) in the main hall at Canterbury College. Students undertaking the college's foundation degree in event management helped organise and host the event.

Keynote speaker Jim Haywood, environment director of Business in the Community, explained how global warming is affecting the South East and the risks and opportunities this represents for local businesses. Jane Ollis from Business Link emphasised the value of green credentials and urged delegates to consider how environmental changes will affect their businesses in the future.

Delegates received an update on the legal requirements and penalties relating to the disposal of business waste and recycling from Ian MacKenzie, recycling and waste minimisation offer from Canterbury City Council. Mr MacKenzie also announced the launch of the council's new EnviroPlus scheme, which has been piloted by C4B associates.

Leader of Canterbury City Council, Councillor John Gilbey, encouraged local businesses to work with the council to help reduce emissions, reduce waste and protect the natural and built environment.

At the end of the conference, delegates were invited to complete pledge cards, confirming their commitment to sustainable business practices.

Clive Relf, chairman of C4B's Environment Committee, said: "Over 85 local businesses attended the event and the feedback to date has been extremely positive. Delegates appreciated the opportunity to learn about green business initiatives and how these can benefit the bottom line, and to talk to local providers of green services and products. We are reviewing the pledges and these will be published on the C4B website, www.canterbury4business.co.uk in due course."
