Future Skills in the Spotlight
Changes in education and their likely impact on employers were reviewed by local businesses at a recent 'Future Skills' breakfast briefing organised by C4B (Canterbury4Business) and Kent Works.
Over 40 companies attended the event, which focused on the new specialised diplomas that the government plans to introduce in September 2008 and how the business community can benefit from and support these new initiatives.
Speakers included Martin Blincow, Kent County Council teacher advisor for vocational and work-related learning and business studies; Dave Butcher, health and safety manager from Amphenol, and Phil Wicker, Planning Partnership Co-ordinator, 14-19 Canterbury. Students from St Anselm's School in Canterbury gave a presentation on the benefits and problems of work experience.
Paul Barrett, chairman of C4B, said: "This was a useful opportunity for local employers to find out more about the new diplomas and discuss ways in which the business community can help support young people entering the workplace. "
Jan Thornby, operations manager for specialist projects, Kent Works, said: "We were very pleased with the attendance and delighted to see so many employers from Canterbury district getting involved in improving education business links."
