Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR)

Introduced by the Government in April 2005, SBRR gives eligible businesses with rateable values of below £5,000 the potential to get 50% rate relief on their liability.

Canterbury City Council are extremely pleased that over 80% of the eligible businesses in the district applied for their discount and are keen to encourage the remaining 20% to contact them.

Now is the time to apply for this relief, especially if you think you may be in the "missing" 20%. If you qualify, you will get the relief not only for the new financial year, but reductions can be backdated to include the year ending 31 March 2007, providing you make your application now.

The relief is available to ratepayers whether you have one property or more. However, there must be only one main property and the individual rateable values of other properties must not be more than £2,200 each. Also, the combined rateable value of all properties must be under £15,000.

For businesses with rateable values of £5,000 to £9,999 this relief will decrease on a sliding scale of 1% for every £100 of rateable value.

Eligible businesses with rateable values of between £10,000 and £14,999 will be charged the small business multiplier of 44.1 pence in the £ (proposed at 25/1/07) compared with the standard multiplier of 44.4 pence in the £.

All businesses entitled to receive this relief will be charged using the lower, small business multiplier.

If your circumstances change and you are no longer eligible, you must let us know of the day the change occurred. Your relief will stop from that date.

For an application form, please contact the Business Rates section at Canterbury City Council on 01227 862 326 or 01227 862 316. If you already have this relief, you will need to re-apply for it to continue after 31/3/07 and we will send you a form.
