Torch Relay overnight stops announced

In 2012 Kent will have two stops for the Olympic Torch Relay, Dover on the 18th July 2012 and Maidstone on the 19th July 2012.

With one year to go until the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK, London 2012 have today revealed the dates and locations for the evening stops and celebration events for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay route.

The 70-day Olympic Torch Relay which is presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on the morning of 19 May 2012 and arrive at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In the South East the overnight stops can be confirmed as:

  • Oxford - Monday 9th July, day 54
  • Reading - Tuesday 10th July, day 55
  • Southampton - Saturday 14th July, day 58
  • Portsmouth - Sunday 15th July, day 59
  • Brighton and Hove - Monday 16th July, day 60
  • Hastings - Tuesday 17th July, day 61
  • Dover - Wednesday 18th July, day 62
  • Maidstone - Thursday 19th July, day 63
  • Guildford - Friday 20th July, day 64

These towns and cities will host the torch overnight and evening celebrations featuring a variety of entertainment and shows, each unique to the community putting on the event,  will show off the best of the local area, bringing people together to mark the Olympic Flame's arrival.

These host towns and cities are working on exactly what and where the celebrations will be and how best to involve local people and businesses, as well as welcoming people around the UK and the world to join the celebration in some way. More details will be released later in the year, including information on how you can get involved.

In addition to the locations confirmed on the route today, many other cities, towns, villages and places of outstanding natural beauty, sports venues and community hubs will be announced in a second, more detailed route announcement later this year that will confirm the many other places the Olympic Flame will visit each day.

The Olympic Flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers and once the detailed route is confirmed later this year, it is estimated that 95% of the population will be within a one hour journey time of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
