During the extreme weather conditions Canterbury City Council is maintaining surface conditions for the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors.
Since 16 December, the council has applied 80 tonnes of rock salt throughout the district to include pathways, car parks, salt bins and areas surrounding council buildings. A further 28 tonnes of rock salt has been on order since before Christmas but priority has been given to the county council to keep major roads open. All city council car parks are continuing to be treated. A further 40 tonnes of grit is being collected today (Thursday).
However, with predictions of the low temperatures and ice continuing, the council has to prioritize its distribution schedule.
We have tried to ensure that all areas of the district are receiving adequate distribution of rock salt and grit, but advise everyone – pedestrians and motorists – to exercise extreme caution when being out and about.
Temperatures across the district are expected to remain low, and the road surface temperature will remain particularly low.
Waste collections have been suspended due to the weather conditions. There will be a very limited collection in Canterbury city centre. The situation will be reviewed and there will be further updates.
