The University For The Creative Arts challenged their students at the start of the autumn term to use their creative and innovation skills in coming up with an idea that makes the world a better place.
Assistant Director Of Research & Enterprise at UCA, Uwe Derksen said: "Given the issues we face throughout our world today with climate change, an aging population and poor distribution of wealth, resources and food, this competition is UCA's way of facing up to global challenges.
"Inspiring and empowering the students to use their creativity to make a real difference is critical in today's world; it's key for us all to invest in the next generation and to help them realise their potential, develop their talents and become tomorrow's entrepreneurs."
The ideas have been assessed and the top 40 students have been announced and congratulated. They will go through to the next round of the competition where they will benefit from specialist workshops from branding, marketing & communications to examining stakeholders and the impact of their idea on The Triple Bottom Line - profit, people and the planet. The ideas through are broad and interesting ranging from alternative energy solutions in housing developments and energy generation, to socially positive video games, products to inspire children to be more eco and sustainable on trend furniture.
Only 10 will make it through to the final, held next April at the Design Council, London.
Successful original Dragon and top entrepreneur, Rachel Elnaugh, has kindly agreed to support the competition and joins the panel of judges; adding a huge buzz of excitement to the competition. Rachel says, "Enterprise these days is about so much more than just getting rich! I'm thrilled to be involved in this initiative to encourage innovation which both creates successful businesses as well as solving some of the world's problems."
