AGREEMENT SUPPORTS EDUCATION AND BUSINESSES

Canterbury 14-19 PartnershipCanterbury City Council and the Canterbury 14-19 Partnership have put pen to paper on an agreement to support the introduction of the new Diploma qualification.

The Diploma depends upon educational institutions and local employers working together for the benefit of students aged 14-19. Local businesses should benefit from the work related element that will be introduced into all Diploma studies, while local young people should be helped into employment in the district as the new qualification is rolled out.

The 'memorandum of understanding' will see both organisations working together to foster and support areas of mutual interest for the benefit of businesses and young people seeking work and/or further or higher education. In particular, the council and partnership aim to:

  • Ensure the successful implementation of the new Diploma qualification over the next five years
  • Provide practical examples to local employers of the advantages and benefits of Diploma engagement
  • Ensure the council is the first point of reference for diploma curriculum designers, given its unique status of being able to offer work related learning in all 17 Diploma areas

The council's contribution to the partnership includes supporting the Canterbury Partnership by providing work related learning opportunities, promoting high quality Diploma student work placements within the council and to businesses through Canterbury4Business (C4B), and ensuring there is support for the Diploma within the council while encouraging its employees to become involved.

In turn, the Canterbury 14-19 Partnership will provide speakers for business events, work with the C4B Education and Skills Group to promote the Diplomas across the district, and invite council employees to join in the planning and evaluation of Diploma work related learning activities.

Canterbury City Council's Chief Executive, Colin Carmichael, said: "We are proud to be the first local authority in the country to sign the agreement with the 14-19 Diploma. There is a lot of support within the council for this initiative, and we look forward to making a real difference to the lives of young people in our district through the promotion of Diplomas and learning opportunities."

Kent County Council's Managing Director for Children, Families and Education, Rosalind Turner, said: "I would like to congratulate everyone involved with the Canterbury 14-19 Partnership and thank Canterbury City Council for its commitment to the scheme. The diploma qualifications are an exciting opportunity for young people to learn essential skills that various industries need.

"This will help them immensely when they come to apply for higher education, training or employment. I wish the partnership and all students who take part in the diplomas every success for the future."

Chair and Coordinator of the Canterbury 14-19 Partnership, Philip Wicker, said: "The commitment to the Diploma shown by the city council has been exemplary. I hope very much that other district councils in Kent will have the same imaginative approach to underwriting this important new qualification. The Diploma has already begun in Canterbury in two institutions and from September 2010 there could be a further seven."

The Canterbury 14-19 Partnership is made up of all 15 secondary schools in the district and Canterbury College.
