Business as usual on the Kings Mile

The King’s Mile Traders’ Association is developing a promotional campaign to raise awareness of this unique area. The association will be launching a new website soon and is also working with Whitefriars on cross-promotional ideas. Canterbury City Council recently replaced wind-damaged lamp standard banners on the King’s Mile with new wind-resistant banners that reinforce the identity of the area.

New plans are also underway to ‘green’ the city centre with colourful displays of flowers and greenery outside business premises.

Canterbury City Partnership (CCP) is working with Canterbury City Council and local traders to establish ways of providing local businesses with funding for ‘hardware’, such as planters and hanging baskets: businesses will then be expected to provide the plants and maintain their displays. As well as making the city centre a more attractive place to live, work and visit, the partnership is aiming to secure a ‘Britain in Bloom’ gold award for Canterbury by the end of the decade.

Figures for Whitstable and Herne Bay town centres are also holding up well. Coastal Town Centre Management, which conducts a monthly survey of empty business premises in the core of the two town centres, shows that Whitstable has only 1.8% of business premises empty and Herne Bay 4.5%. Chris West, Coastal Towns Manager, reports that traders in both towns are currently reporting good sales due to the weather, with some saying that their takings are a month ahead of last year.

The Bay and Whit loyalty card schemes are also going from strength to strength, with over 300 local businesses involved at the last count. There’s no charge to sign up to the scheme, traders are simply asked to give card holders a discount or promotional offer when they use their loyalty card. Businesses that already belong to the scheme are featured on the Bay Whit Loyalty Card website www.baywhitcard.co.uk , so if you are interested in signing up, please visit the site to find out how.
