EnviroPlus Scheme

The EnviroPlus scheme is a joint initiative between C4B and Canterbury City Council. The scheme aims to provide owners of SMEs with essential information about their legal obligations concerning waste, and encourage them to take steps to become more environmentally aware. Once a business has joined the scheme, the owner can enter for an EnviroPlus Award. The first awards will be presented at a high profile event in the next few months.

Membership of the scheme is free and it is open to all businesses in the Canterbury district. Once a business owner has signed up to the scheme, he or she will be visited by a council officer, who will offer advice on issues such as duty of care and pre-treatment of waste. The officer will also provide the owner with an information pack explaining how to reduce waste and energy consumption and recycle unwanted materials.

Members receive a window sticker to show customers and clients that they belong to the scheme.

Members can enter their business for an EnviroPlus Award. The awards have three categories:

One star

  • All staff to know their duty of care and what the pre-treatment regulations entail
  • The business to comply with the duty of care and pre-treatment regulations
  • Audit to be carried out of waste storage facilities
  • Proof of using a registered waste carrier
  • Business to show current pre-treatment form
  • All staff to be aware of the WEEE and Hazardous Waste Regulations

Two stars

As above, plus:

  • Proof of energy saving measures, such as:
  • Energy saving light bulbs
  • Heating reductions
  • Water saving measures
  • Paper and packaging reduction
  • Product reuse
  • Composting

Three stars

As above, plus:

  • Showing environmental responsibility, such as:

  • Flower baskets and planters
  • Involvement in community projects (carnivals etc)
  • Free advertising for community projects
