Associates get up to speed on new train

Vince Lucas, commercial director of Southeastern Trains, outlined how the new rail link will benefit the district by increasing demand for housing, boosting tourist numbers and making Canterbury, together with the rest of Kent, a more attractive place to conduct and locate business. The high-speed train, which begins service on December 13, will have a journey time of one hour from Canterbury West to St Pancras.

Adrian Verrall, planning policy manager and Nick Churchill, economic development projects and policy officer, Canterbury City Council, gave an overview of the existing employment land in the district and suggested that new and emerging industries, such as digital infrastructure and environment industries, could offer valuable new opportunities for business development in the district.

The keynote speaker, Colin Carmichael, chief executive of Canterbury City Council, informed delegates how important the business community is to the district. He updated delegates on new projects such as the new Marlow Theatre, the Beaney Gallery Museum and Library, and the Whitstable Park & Ride scheme, explained how the city council is dealing with financial issues, and advised delegates of changes to business rates.

The conference included two award presentations. Dawn Hudd, assistant head economic development & tourism, Canterbury City Council, presented three students with Canterbury Christ Church University Entrepreneurship Awards for their innovative business ideas. Councillor John Gilbey, leader of the city council, presented Enviroplus Awards to three businesses. Herbaceous of Whitstable, Robert Mitchell Hairdressing, also in Whitstable, and ADM Computing of Canterbury, all received awards for implementing sustainable practices in their workplaces.
